SkunkTech riders gearing up for Barrett Junction Outlaw. Jan 29, 2010
Barrett Junction is home to one of the oldest downhill skateboard courses still used today.
The California Outlaw Series will once again bring riders from all over the globe to this nasty little road off Highway 94 near the Mexico border. Barrett has been a favorite hill for many riders over the years, not only for its history but also for its cheese grater-like surface.
The integrity of the road surface acts as an equalizer; no rider has a clean line at Barrett. Riders who think they've missed every hole in the upper turns find themselves fighting the tractor tracks, each which feel like rumble strips with magnets. Although the course is challenging for every rider, the cream rises to the top. Last year, IGSA World Champion Mischo Erban took home a first place finish over a stacked field of racers.
The charred remains of trees, random scorpions and Border Patrol agents add to the mystique of this hidden piece of downhill history...a history that many of the new riders might be unaware of. The road is hidden behind the family-owned Barrett Cafe, which has been serving their famous Friday night "fish fry" for over 50 years. During the 1950s, the cafe hosted rodeos for transit cowboys, and remains an outpost for travelers in the SoCal backcountry.
The Barrett Road course was once a qualifier for the Gravity Games and has been a battle ground for names like Connor, DeKeyser, the Rogers brothers, Hardwick, and the man who calls Barret "his hill:" Rick Kludy.
Rick will always be a source of information and smiles when skateboard racing is the topic, but when the conversation turns to Barrett, things get a little bit serious. Racing Barrett is not something to be taken lightly, and Rick makes sure each new generation of riders understands this. Rick walks the sidelines, acts as the starter and drives shuttle vehicles, one of which is usually his personal truck. While many riders like to keep some secrets when it comes to racing a hill they know well, Barrett is a hill that Rick doesn't keep many secrets about. With his knowledge, many of us have been not only able to walk away in one piece from Barrett, but also look forward to coming back year after year.
